Here below are some frequently asked questions and their answers.
1.

I would like to know the payment details for subscribing the CU Alumni Internet Services?

Ans:

The services charges are the following:

Sign-up fee: HK$100 (Non-refundable)
Monthly charges: HK$ 20 (includes 5 hours of dialup access time)
Additional dialup usage: HK$5 per hour

CU Credit Card Holder will have 30% discount.


2.

I am not using the software and Operating System described in the setup guide. Can I have the parameters so that I can configure it by myself?

Ans:

You may refer these parameters to set up:

E-mail setting:

  • Webmail URL: https://webmail.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk
  • POP server: pop.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk for POP account setting
  • IMAP server: imap.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk for IMAP account setting
  • SMTP server: smtp.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk

News setting:

  • News server: news.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk

Proxy setting:

  • Proxy server: proxy.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk port number 8080

Dialup setting:

  • Dialup number: 29330300
  • DNS servers: 202.45.188.37, 137.189.192.3 (choose Obtained from Server or DHCP if possible)


3.

I have joined a Broadband ISP. Can I access your service through this connection?

Ans:

Yes, currently you can access our e-mail and Usenet news service through any ISP. Please follow the e-mail setting mentioned in the FAQ. You have to change the SMTP Server to be your ISP's SMTP Server. Some ISPs like Netvigator may require you to logon their mail server in order to send e-mail with originating addresses not in their domain name. Please consult your ISP for detail. For Usenet news service, please follow the news setting mentioned above and select This server requires me to log on at the Server tab of the news server Properties in Outlook Express.

How can I access those e-mail sent to me which were identified as SPAM by your antispam filter?

Ans:

You can access those e-mail through IMAP or Webmail. Those e-mail were saved in a folder called massmail. They will be removed automatically 30 days after the delivery. You can move these mail to other folders to prevent them from being removed.


5.

I am connecting to the Internet from hotspots or public networks. How can I access my e-mail through a secure channel?

Ans:

The easiet way is to access webmail using HTTPS through the URL https://webmail.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk. Alternatively, you can access through Outlook Express with the following settings:

POP setting:

  • Server name: alumni.cuhk.edu.hk
  • Set the port number to 995 and select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under Security tab

IMAP setting:

  • Server name: alumni.cuhk.edu.hk
  • Set the port number to 993 and select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under Security tab

SMTP setting:

  • SMTP server: alumni.cuhk.edu.hk
  • Set the port number to 587 and select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) under Security tab
  • Select My server requires authentication under Servers tab and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server in the Logon information of the outgoing mail server


6.

Does CU Alumni Internet Services support personal home page? How much does it cost?

Ans:

Yes, we do support personal homepage authoring (but no CGI is allowed). Please refer to the web page, http://alumni.cuhk.edu.hk/homepage/index.html, for procedures to upload your home page to your account.

The URL of your web page should be:

http://alumni.cuhk.edu.hk/~userid
(e.g. if your User ID is john, then the URL will be:
http://alumni.cuhk.edu.hk/~john)


7.

How can I check my accumulate online time in a month?

Ans: Use any web browser (e.g. Netscape) and go to http://alumni.cuhk.edu.hk/pshell to check through the web-based query.


8.

Can I access E-Resources subscribed by University Library through this service?

Ans:

No, but University Library is providing another service called Digital Library Service for Alumni which can access some of the databases. You can check the detail of the service with University Library.


9.

When will I receive a bill (paper or electronic) each month?

Ans:

We'll send the billing statement to you via E-mail. Normally you will receive last month's statement before the seventh working day of current month.


10.

Do I need to install the software in Chinese Windows if I want to read messages from Internet in Chinese? Do I need to do the same installation to Japanese Windows if I want to read in Japanese?

Ans:

Yes. Usually the Internet packages like Internet Explorer would copy some files in your Windows directory. If you have more than one copy of Windows (no matter which language used), you should install your corresponding package to those Windows environment.


11.

I have installed MS Exchange to my Windows 95 system. I can receive mails from other people; however, it seemed that I cannot send mails from Exchange to others. All mails were stored in "Outbox". Would you please tell me how to solve this problem?

Ans:

Exchange will send out mail when you select Deliver Now Using All services under Tools menu.

It is assumed that your Plus! and Windows 95 are legal copies, if you installed these products as described in Setup Guide, it should work as expect.


12.

How to specify the proxy server settings in Netscape Communicator 4.x?

Ans:

.Select the Edit menu.
.Select the Preference... menu item
.Select the Proxies panel under the Advanced item.
.Click the check box of Manual Proxy Configuration.
.Click the View button.
.Under the view option, specify,

FTP proxy proxy.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk 8080
Gopher Proxy proxy.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk 8080
Security Proxy proxy.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk 8080
HTTP Proxy proxy.alumni.cuhk.edu.hk 8080
